The seminar at the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia was a success!
Over fifty participants from the research project attended, as well as government officials, non-government organization liaisons, academics, and students. |
Speakers and GuestsSeveral main points were made during the seminar by invited speakers and guests:
Speakers spoke of jamu as more than just a product, but as a cultural heritage that needs to be preserved. They stated their preference for jamu as an effective medication, when produced hygienically using all natural ingredients (no preservatives). The jamu industry in Indonesia is growing, and is being exported to other countries. One speaker mentioned an experience of going to Nigeria, and meeting a woman from Bali who had a business treating customers with Indonesian herbs. Jamu can provide economic empowerment to those who sell it. Government officials who attended the seminar expressed interest in serving the needs of jamu sellers and providing small scale sellers with more resources, such as loans with low interest rates, training, and business networks, by inviting sellers to participate in jamu cooperatives. |
The Event Coordinators and VolunteersThis event was successful because of the hardworking individuals who did the majority of the planning, coordination and work. Many were students from UGM. All of the small details needed much attention, and we would like to thank those who made this event possible!
